3 About My Photographic Work

(My photography website is at www.lawrenceruss.com .)

Although, ironically, I didn’t take up photography as my principal artistic medium until I was in danger of losing my eyesight in the late 1990s, my love for photography began in my high school years, when I discovered the works of some of my greatest and most enduring loves in the world of photography:  Edward Weston, Andre Kertesz, Bill Brandt, and Robert Frank.

Eventually, though, my creative work metamorphosed from the writing of poetry to the making of photographs.  Since then, my work has won various awards, including Nominee recognition in the 2021 International Color Photography Awards, in People, Silhouette, and Still Life; eleven Honorable Mentions from the Fine Art Photography Awards in 2015-2021 in Fine Art (series), Open Theme (series); Nature (series, twice), Cityscapes (twice), Portraits (twice), Architecture (twice), andSeascapes; Honorable Mention from the International Photography Awards in 2015, in Fine Art-Other (series); First Honorable Mention in the Annual Juried Exhibition of the Housatonic Museum of Art, juried by Judy Kim; and a Merit Award in a Single Images Contest issue of COLOR Magazine.  My work has been selected for regional, national and international juried exhibitions by such figures as Maurice Tuchman, Curator Emeritus of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art: David Vestal, the renowned photographer, printer, educator and columnist; Amber Terranova, the Photo Editor of PDN; and Elizabeth Smith, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

Images of mine have been selected in international competition, for the 2020 Juried Members Exhibition and the 2019 International Juried Exhibition of the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, CA; the 2019 International Juried Competition of The Photo Review; the 2019 “Open” exhibition and the 2010 “RED” exhibition of the Center of Fine Art Photography in CO; for 9 issues of F-Stop Magazine; for 8 exhibitions of PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, VT; for 8 exhibitions of the A Smith Gallery in TX; for 13 exhibitions of the Black Box Gallery in Portland, OR; for 6 exhibitions at the Atlanta Photography Group Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia; for 5 exhibitions at Darkroom Gallery in VT; for 4 exhibitions at Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis, MN; for 3 exhibitions at the New Britain Museum of American Art in CT; and for the 2019 Mixmaster exhibition at the Mattatuck Museum of Culture and History in Waterbury, CT.  Work of mine has also been chosen for various other national, regional, and state-wide exhibitions, including the SPECTRA National Photography Triennial of the Silvermine Art Gallery in New Canaan, CT.
